How far in advance do I need to book?

To make a couture bridal gown, I need between three and eight months notice to secure a booking, depending on the time of year.

For orders from the glove collections I need 4 months notice.

For alterations, I usually need three weeks, although for wedding dress adjustments, please call to book an appointment as soon as you collect your dress.

How long does it take?

An alteration takes around 30 minutes to pin, and usually three weeks to complete.

To be measured for a garment to be made takes 10 minutes

To do a fitting takes between ½ and 1 hour

To make a wedding dress takes between 4 and 6 weeks

What happens about fabric?

We use a number of silk suppliers through which we can order fabric for you using the vast range of samples we have for you to see.  Alternatively we have a list of excellent fabric shops which we recommend.  If you are unable to visit them, you can call them and describe what you are looking for and they will send you samples free of charge.

What do I need to bring?

For a hem adjustment, you’ll need to bring the shoes you’ll be wearing.

For evening and bridalwear, you’ll also need the underwear you’ll be wearing.  If you are having a dress made, you’ll need to bring these for measuring and also for each fitting.

For a consultation, bring any pictures / magazines / existing garments / fabric swatches which help to explain your idea.  NB. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have anything to bring! An idea is all that’s needed.

back to FAQ

When do you do fittings?

Tuesday  to Friday between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm.  All fittings are by appointment only. Sometimes I have appointments available on a Saturday

How does it work when bridesmaids are geographically scattered?

This is a very common situation, and whilst it is fun for the bridesmaids to come and have a trying on session of the sample styles and colours together, there are a number of solutions by which the bridesmaids never need to come to Witley.

Often, the bride chooses the styles and colour for her bridesmaids’ dresses in their absence. They can send their measurements to me, having followed my simple measurement guidelines online.

Bridesmaids’ dresses are then made in the closest standard size to the measurements given, and once completed, can be altered if necessary to fit perfectly.

I can recommend alterers throughout the UK. Alterations are very straightforward as the styles are so simple

back to FAQ

How many fittings do I need?

Usually just one for alterations and between two and six for couture dressmaking, depending on the garment, and whether a calico toile is to be used.

 back to FAQ

Can I bring someone with me to my fittings?

Yes, there’s plenty of room, however from experience, we’ve found that the fewer people there are, the more relaxed you’ll feel.  Particularly for brides to be, there’s the temptation to bring bridesmaids, friends and family members, when in fact a fitting is an opportunity to relax and enjoy some calm and time just for you.
